Detailed Description

The First NEW Bubble Lamp Product in nearly half a century. Modernica reinterprets the classic Bubble Lamp into a replacement lamp shade.

Modernica has reconfigured the design of the iconic Bubble Lamp designed by George Nelson in 1948 to accommodate existing table and floor lamp bases. Modernica has been the official manufacturer and distributor of the George Nelson Bubble Lamps since 1996. With a lack of ready made, high quality lamp shades made in the modernist vein, Modernica has invented a new shade based on the George Nelson Bubble Lamp. The idea was to invent a modernist lamp shade to fit most traditional bases. Almost everyone has an orphan lamp base in need of a shade. The shade has the DNA of the Nelson Bubble Lamp while referencing the shade of a traditional lamp shade. Use as table lamp shade or floor lamp shade. The bubble lamp shade can also be converted to a hanging pendant bubble lamp by adding a canopy kit to your order. The conversion kit includes a brushed nickel ceiling plate that measures 5.25'', socket with ceramic casing, a spyder attachment and 6' standard cord.

A mid-century classic icon, the Bubble Lamp was first designed by George Nelson in 1947 and was produced by Howard Miller starting in the early 1950s and ending in 1979. Modernica, our licensed supplier, has reissued the George Nelson Bubble Lamps to the original specifications, using the original Howard Miller tooling. These famous bubble lamps are presently a part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was in 1947 that George Nelson discovered a self webbing material used to preserve ships in New York. He became convinced that the translucent material would be perfect to create bubble lamps which were organic in design. He made a metal frame, tracked down the source of the webbing material and then created a large glowing sphere and named it the Bubble Lamp. Nelson made many variations to the original shape. These include Saucer, Ball, Cigar, Apple, Pear, Criss Cross, Lantern and Propeller. The George Nelson Bubble Lamp collection includes desk lamps, pendant lamps, sconce lamps, table lamps and floor lamps all available on this website exclusively manufactured by Modernica Bubble Lamp collection.
